Community Exchange NL
A local exchange network helping people share goods, services, talents, and resources through community-based mutual credit systems.
What Is Community Exchange NL?
Community Exchange NL, previously called LETS Barter NL, is one of many LETS systems around the world — also known as “mutual credit” systems.
These systems allow people to exchange goods and services without relying solely on traditional money.
Instead, members use local credits often called local currency, alternative currency, or complementary currency to purchase what they need within the community.
In Newfoundland tradition, codfish was once used as currency, so our local exchange currency is called COD — meaning “Cash On Delivery” within the local economy.
How It Works
Why Community Exchange Matters
Community Exchange NL helps bridge the gap between unmet needs and under-utilized community resources.
Community Support
Members help one another by sharing talents, skills, services, and resources within the community.
Local Economy
Encourages people to buy local, reduce cash expenses, and strengthen local businesses.
Flexible Payments
Members choose their own pricing and decide what percentage of COD or Canadian dollars they accept.
Community Projects
Supports non-profit organizations and community initiatives through shared resources and cooperative participation.
Building A Stronger Local Community
Members list the goods and services they offer in an online directory, much like the Yellow Pages.
Some members accept 100% COD, while others choose a combination of COD and Canadian dollars.
Transactions are completed by transferring COD credits between member accounts, creating a supportive, community-based economy.
Community Exchange NL creates opportunities for people to contribute, connect, and thrive together while reducing financial barriers.
